A man you never heard of, Tom Ince, created Hollywood and was murdered for it. The Oscar itself may be an homage to Ince, the embalmed creator of the Western and the modern concept of a movie studio.

First, Ince’s murderer, the famous William Randolph Hearst, invited Ince on his yacht for a last cruise to the next world. Hearst started his career hiring gunmen to rob gold miners taking their diggings to the Assayers office before he made a fortune in publishing.

William Randolph Hearst spun up the Spanish-American War with Fake News of the sabotage of the USS Maine, which was struck by a torpedo from a US submarine in a false flag attack.

Hearst’s beginnings in gold may explain that quality of the Oscar, along with the Oscar’s legendary heft. The current Oscar museum only remembers Ince now as a movie pioneer, prophetically starting his studio at the now burned out Pacific Palisades

Ince emplyed 700 stage hands and cowboys in Pacific Palisades, and he made 800 movies there in the first instantiation of the Hollywood movie studio system.

Ince also founded what became MGM and now Sony Pictures As studios got bigger, they needed more landed Almost every other movie mogul in Hollywood copied Ince’s model.

Tom Ince also made Beverly Hills a swanky destination on the elevated Sunset Avenue where sunsets could be seen over the growing Western Los Angeles below.

The beautiful home is gone now, given way to an office building, but Susnset Strip remains iconic for the place to advertise Oscar hopefuls, beginning at his house on Sunset.

When I watch the Oscars this year, I will be thinking about Tom Ince’s murder with every statuette given out, and how they really should be called Toms or Inces.
